Colleagues,
We've recently noticed a concerning trend of unreported lost and stolen devices. This oversight can seriously compromise university data security. To address this, we're reminding everyone of the critical steps to take if your laptop or other device is lost or stolen.
Why This Matters and What we Need from You
Prompt reporting helps protect sensitive information and allows us to take swift action to secure university and personal data. Your cooperation is crucial! Please review the steps below to ensure you're prepared to act quickly if your device is ever lost or stolen.
Steps to Take if Your Device is Lost or Stolen
- Report your lost or stolen device to the local authorities in the location where it was lost or stolen (e.g., airport security, local police)
- Check your encryption status & serial number in My Devices. You’ll need this information in the next step when you submit a ticket to the University Privacy Office.
- Report a Privacy Incident with the University Privacy Office (UPO):
- Under “What is the nature of your request?” select “Privacy Incident” in the dropdown menu.
- Under “What type of incident are you reporting?” select either “Lost/stolen device” or “Lost/stolen device and paper PHI/PII (Protected Health Information/Personal)”
- Proceed to complete the remainder of the form.
- Notify your Department Property Administrator (DPA). To find your DPA, visit the DPA Directory.
- (Optional) Remotely wipe and lock your device. Detailed instructions are available here.
